Global Warming

Global warming is the gradual raise in temperature of the Earth's surface that has aggravated considerably since the industrial revolution. Over the past two decades the effect has become more than noticeable. The global average temperature has increased 0.4 to 0.8 degrees C since the late 1800's. Many experts estimate an additional 1.4 to 5.8 degree rise in the average temperature by 2100.

Tidal Power

The ocean has currents and tides that circulate round the world. This vast amount water with high potential movement produces immense amounts of energy. Tidal is a form of hydropower that converts the energy of tides into electricity or other useful forms of power. Tidal energy is produced using tidal energy generators. Some of the oldest ocean energy technologies make use of tidal power.

All coastal areas experience two high and two low tides. These tidal differences can be harnessed into electricity, but the difference between high and low tides must be at least five meters or more. Large underwater turbines are placed in regions with high tidal movements, and are designed to capture the kinetic motion of the ebbing and surging of ocean tides in order to produce electricity.

Clean Energy from Flowing Water

Water is at present the leading renewable energy source used by electric utilities to generate electric power. Currently there are numerous hydro-electric power stations, providing around 20% of the world's electricity. The name "hydro" comes from the Greek word for water. The water cycle of evaporating from the heat of the sun and falling back to earth is continuous, thus hydropower is considered a renewable energy resource.

Hydropower facilities intercept the water on its descending path, converting its mechanical energy into electricity. Hydroelectric power plants operate where suitable waterways are available; many of the best of these sites have already been developed. Generating electricity using water has several advantages. Besides being a source of cheap power it has an advantage of no fuel combustion, there is negligible air pollution in comparison with fossil fuel power plants and limited thermal pollution compared to nuclear plants.
